Best Steam Hair Straightener Review

What is a Steam Hair Straightener? How does it work?

steam hair straightener

Practically speaking, steam hair straightener is the next big thing in the world of hair styling. Technically speaking, it is a hair styling device that straightens and smooth out your hair with built in hydration that helps heal dry brittle hair while protecting it from the heat of the plates. It will make your hair look healthier and smoother. It is a must-have gadget in modern woman’s get ready room.

A steam hair straightener is fairly easy to use, but, when you are first starting out using one, then I would advised to take with a friend who has already used one or go through the user manuals before beginning to use it.

Is a Steam Hair Straightener gentler on your hair then a Flat Iron or Electric Hair Straightening Brush?

Flat Iron, Electric Straightening Brush, or a Steam Hair Straightener I am sure you are wondering which one should you use, what is the difference between them, and which one is the best for my hair type?

One thing these three things have in common is that they all are a heated device that is used to straighten and style hair.  Lets talk what makes each of them unique.

Flat Iron - The Flat Iron has two ceramic or metal heated plates that is used to straighten or smooth your hair by placing section of hair between the plates and running the plates down the hair to its ends.  The Flat Iron is the most effective straightening option but it also the most damaging because of the direct heat to both side of your hair from the plates. However used at the correct hair tempature for your hair and with heat protectant you reduce the amount of damage.

Electric Hair Brush - The Electric Hair Brush combines the flat iron and a traditional brush the base of the brush is a heated plate which straightens smooths hair while brushing it.  While the Electric Hair Brush doesn't get your hair pin straight as a Flat Iron can, it is a healthier option for your hair as the time your hair is exposed to the of heat is less and you are not pressing it between two hot plates like you would be with the Flat Iron.  The Electric Hair Brush straightens your hair without reducing the volume.

Steam Hair Straightener -  The Steam Hair Straightener is similar to the Flat Iron but it also releases steam as you straighten your hair. The steam is designed to add moisture back into your hair to prevent damage to your hair. It is recommended for chemically processed hair as it is easier on the hair than traditional flat irons. Depending on the length of your hair, the water reservoir may need to be filled up more than once. This may be a downfall to some as it can add more time to styling your hair.

Advantages of the Steam Hair Straightener

  • Less Damage - Steam moisture protects your hair from the heated plates
  • Salon like results at home - Great for coarse, curly, natural hair
  • Shinier Locks- Steam mist gives your hair a glossy finish
  • Less Frizz -  Steam straightening makes your hair more resistant to humidity providing frizz control.

Disadvantage of the Steam Hair Straightener

  • The water tank may have to be filled more than once when styling your hair and this may add time to your routine.
  • It takes some time to get use to it. While learning it isn't uncommon for someone to burn their scalp or hand on the steam. Key to avoiding getting burnt is holding the iron at the proper angle. Make sure you read the user manual before using one.

Buying Factors and Features

Below are some buying factors you might want to consider before purchasing a steam hair straightener.

Plate Material

Ceramic material produces a more even heat that is less harsh on our hair. As well, ceramic emits negative ions to speed up drying time and smooth out frizz.

Titanium can get very hot and therefore is not recommended for dry, damaged or chemically processed hair. If you have healthy hair this is a great material that provides excellent results.

Tourmaline is a coating  and it is a semi precious mineral that produces negative ions, which produces smoother hair.

I recommend Ceramic Tourmaline plate material as you get all the benefits possible and will help prevent damage.

Fixed or Floating Plates

Floating plates are plates that are able to move side to side and and move with the angle of the iron. What this allows is for even heat distribution across the section of hair and greats consistent results minimizing the need to go over a section multiple times.

Fixed plates don't move. This doesn't not allow the plates to always touch. Therefore, all your hair doesn't get an even amount of heat and you get different results. Getting different results causes you to have to go over a section of hair multiple times. Which we know that heat is not good for our hair. We want to minimize the amount time our hair is exposed to heat. I recommend fixed plates if you have dry or damaged hair.

Plate Lock Feature

This feature needs to be considered for the convenience of storage. If the plates do not lock, then the straightner will take up more space when stored . However, if storage is not a concern for you or if you hair straightener is going to be on  your counter all the time, then you do not need to worry about this feature.

Swivel Cord

Swivel Cord means the cords rotates 360 degrees this is allows for a tangle free cord. This feature is most important when you are curling your hair because of all the twisting. If you are going to use your hair straightener for just straightening then I don't believe this is feature is a necessity.

Automatic Shut Off

Most of the hair straighteners come with this feature. We live a busy lives and are always in a hurry, which leads us to not always not turning off our hair styling tools after using them.  This is when this feature comes into real use no need to worry anymore about whether you turned you hair straightener off. This is a must for me as I have wasted many hours over the course of the years driving back home as I couldn't remember if I turned off my straightener or not.  Some hair straighteners have 30 minute auto-shut off functionality and some have 60 minute.

2 n 1 – Can be used for curling as well

As long as the iron is one inch plate or smaller any flat iron can be used to create curls. However, if the body of the plate is rounded off rather then square thn you will have much better success at curling your hair. So, essentially all Flat Irons can be used for curling some may be easier to curl with then others.

Replacement Water Tank Does it come with one and/or can they be purchased separately?

Not all of them come with removable water tank. It depends on the price you pay and the company you buy the hair straightener from. But, it’s a good feature to look for as it makes highly convenient for cleaning the hair straightener after using it.  Some brands sell replacement tanks. This is a nice feature incase you break or loose the tank your can just replace it rather than having to buy a whole new steam straightener.

Temperature Settings

If you have dry damaged hair being able to adjust the temperature setting is a must. As you want to have it on the lowest possible setting.  Some flat irons that don't allow you to adjust the temperature may be too hot for your hair type and can lead to breakage and severe damage. If you have healthy strong hair then the need for adjustable settings shouldn't be a game changer for you. Read the user manual to figure out the temperature setting for your hair type or check out this article here that will help you determine that right temperature setting for your hair type should be.

Dual Voltage

If you travel overseas frequently this is a feature you might be interested in as not all the countries have same voltage for electronic gadgets. If it does not have dual voltage and you do happen to travel overseas you can always buy an adapter.

Q & A About the Steam Straightener

What types of hair should it or should not be used on?

Hair steam straighteners are suitable for all kinds of hair, be it a curly hair, normal hair, thick hair, or thin hair.

Do not use it on wet hair. This will cause severe hair damage it is like boiling your hair from the inside.

Can you use Oil in the water tank instead of water for steaming or add a few drops of my own oil to the water reservoir?

The only time you would want to use oil in the water tank is if you steam flat iron is built to do this and the instruction manual says you can.  Not all steam flat irons are built to do this and if you put oil in on that isn't you can ruin your iron as the holes for the steam will get clogged.

So in other words only use oil in the water reservoir when instructed to.

Do you have to use distilled water, or can you use tap water instead?

You can use either. Why some people so only to use distilled water is to avoid the potential of mineral build up in the steam holes as distilled water is mineral free.  If you were to use tap water and you did get a mineral build up it won't ruin your steam straightener it will just will not work as effectively. Mineral build up can be removed with a vinegar water solution.

Can you use it on wet hair?

You can. But, the chances of your hair getting damaged are high if you use it on wet hair. I would not recommend you to use the steam hair straighteners on wet hair. Dry your hair first.

Steam Straightener Use Tips

  • If steam is not coming out try one of these things. Make sure that the thin plastic coating placed over the plate used for packaging has been removed. Take out the water tank, use cotton swabs to clean atomization device on the tank. Keep the whole tank surface dry.
  • Keep the water reservoir filled at all times even when not in use. This will ensure that the wick doesn't dry out. If the wick drys out it tend to prolong the time it takes to generate steam.
  • If you purchase a Steam Straightener with combs be sure to comb out each section of hair prior to using the straightener to prevent breakage. If you don't the combs on the straightener could snag and break your hair.
  • If you purchase a Steam Straightener that instructs you not to use oil in the water tank be sure to follow those instructions. Adding oil to a water tank that is not built for oil will ruin your steam straightener.
  • If your steam straightener comes to you with drops of water in the tank, don't be alarmed. Don't worry your new straightener has not been used. This is a quality control measure that most manufacturers do prior to leave the facility to ensure each tool is functioning as designed.

ElleSye Steam Straightener

Accompanying the latest and advanced steam function, the ElleSye hair steam straightener is all you need to get that stylish hair you want.
